At the beginning of 2009 the Economics Network launched their annual Student Essay competition. This year, students were asked ' How would you make difficult economics easier to learn?' With a record number of submissions, competition was stiff. Many thanks to all those who entered and a big well done to the three prizewinners.

First prize went to Maria Riera Lamela. Maria is in her third year of her Economics degree at LSE, her ideas to improve the learning of difficult economics involved assessment methods, application of theory and interactivity. However, before the whole essay is spoilt for you, have a read yourself.

Second prize went to Marco Arafat. Marco is in his first year of an International Politics and Economics degree at Aberystwyth University. Marco discusses the use of games to learn difficult concepts and how this helps with the overall learning experience of the student. To see what games Marco suggests, have a read through his essay.

Third prize went to Jonas Varnauskas, a third year Economics student from Nottingham University. Jonas discusses the difficulty of maths for many students and how it should be embedded into the theory to provide an easier learning experience, he also considers using animation in learning.
